Aspartame was discovered accidentally by an American drug researcher by the name of James Shlatter at G.D. Searle in 1965. While making a drug that reduced the effects of ulcer, he accidentally spilled some on his hand. When he licked his fingertip turn a page of his studies he discovered it's surprising sugary taste. This discovery made the G.D. Searle and Co. to make hundreds of modifications to this drug. However, none of these materials offered easy manufacturing, excellent taste quality , digestible qualities, good stability, and low toxicity. This company patented the final product and started to commercialize and manufacture this product. The U.S. patent expired in 1992, and the product was available to any company who wanted to use this new product. In 1980 the FDA approved aspartame as a sweetener but was shattered by complaints about aspartame's safety health risk. The American Medical Association added to this situation that aspartame had no negative health risk at all and aspartame has been gaining market share ever since. Just like that, aspartame was approved in over 93 foreign countries!
